1 in 4: One in four people infected with dengue will become ill.
For people who are ill with dengue, the symptoms may be mild or severe.
Severe dengue can be fatal within a few hours and often requires hospitalization.
Symptoms
Mild symptoms of dengue may be confused with other diseases that cause fever, aches and pains, or rash.

The most common symptom of dengue is fever with any of the following:

Rash
Pain and pain (eye pain, usually behind the eyes, muscle, joint or bone pain)
No warning signs
Dengue symptoms usually last 2–7 days. Most people will recover after about a week.

There is no specific medicine to treat dengue.
Treat dengue symptoms and see your healthcare provider.

If you develop fever or have symptoms of dengue, see a healthcare provider. Tell him about your journey.
Rest as much as possible.
Take acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol outside the United States) for controlling fever and relieving pain.
Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen!
Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or drink, with extra electrolytes to stay hydrated.
For mild symptoms, take care of a sick baby, child or family member at home.

Dengue symptoms can be severe within a few hours. Severe dengue is a medical emergency.

Severe dengue

About 1 in 20 people who become ill with dengue will have severe dengue.
Severe dengue is a more serious form of the disease that can result in shock, internal bleeding, and even death.
If you have had a dengue infection before, you are likely to develop severe dengue.
Infants and pregnant women are at increased risk for developing severe dengue.

Signs of severe dengue

Watch for signs and symptoms of severe dengue. Warning signs usually start in 24–48 hours when your fever goes away.

If you or a family member develops any of the following symptoms, immediately go to a local clinic or emergency room:

Stomach or stomach pain, tenderness
Vomiting (at least 3 times in 24 hours)
Bleeding from nose or gums
Vomiting of blood, or blood in stool
Feeling tired, restless or irritable
Severe treatment of dengue
If you develop any warning signs, see a healthcare provider or go to the emergency room immediately.
Severe dengue is a medical emergency and requires immediate medical or hospitalization.
If you are traveling, find health care abroad.
